Happy new year to you all! OK, it wasn’t quite the start to the year we had all hoped for, but there is (with any luck) an end in sight.
And so we enter the third lockdown. An order to stay at home where we can to protect our essential services. For McCarthy’s, as a self-storage provider, we will remain open throughout, as we have through the other lockdowns. This is for several reasons – primarily to ensure that businesses, organisations and charities can keep on working hard.
We actually have a number of NHS and emergency service clients across our storage centres in Leeds, York, Huddersfield, Harrogate and Wakefield. With space in hospitals at a premium, they securely store stock, equipment and documents with us which they may need access to at any time.
Charities also use our storage units, as office space can be prohibitively expensive for storing stock. We’re happy to help out providing space and some use it to store items needed at a moment’s notice. One such not for profit organisation is Homeless Hampers. They rely on donations and self-funding to do their marvelous work – providing food, clothes and other essentials for those sleeping on the streets in Leeds, Bradford and Huddersfield. They also provide food and clothing to homeless shelters and offer advice and assistance to those on the streets who are looking for help. If people get housed, the charity also helps set them up in their new properties with essential items. The work they and lots of other charities do is amazing and so, so important.
We also need to remain open for the small businesses that store with us and need access to their items to continue trading. They may be tradespeople who store equipment or materials. They may be an online retailer, who uses McCarthy’s self storage to keep their stock safe, ready to be shipped to customers. Online shopping has again become even more important now non-essential shops are closed and many are shielding once again.
Of course, the property market is remaining open in this lockdown and a vast number of sales will be taking place ahead of the stamp duty holiday ending in March. Our removals teams are certainly being kept busy, whilst continuing to operate as safely as possible. People may well need storage of some kind linked to a house move, if they find themselves having to vacate their home without having a property which is ready to move into.
We have safety measures in place as you would expect – there’s social distancing of course, we ask that you bring the minimum number of people into the facility and that you wear masks in public areas, and sanitise and wash your hands regularly. We are cleaning communal and high footfall areas, such as the lift buttons, doors and trolley handles, as regularly as possible. Luckily, self storage is often a place where you don’t have to cross paths with anyone, and with extended access available outside of reception hours, there’s no rush in or out at specific times! Speak to one of our team members to find out more.
So, we’ll continue to be here for those who really need us, no matter what. And to everyone we say take care, stay safe and look after yourselves and each other. Let’s hope a healthy and happy 2021 is just around the corner.
