Opening a storage centre in the middle of a pandemic was never in the business plan. But, like all of us, we’ve got to expect the unexpected and roll with it! It may have taken a few weeks longer than we planned as construction was forced to halt – but in July, the doors to McCarthy’s Storage World in York finally opened! And we’ve been delighted with how well its been received.

Our York self storage centre is our first purpose built facility, and as such we’ve been able to build it to our exact requirements – learnt from years of experience with our storage centres in Leeds, Harrogate and Wakefield. So, we hate to brag, but as storage centres go – it’s pretty perfect! There’s 47,000 sq ft of storage space for both business and personal customers.

The location is also great, just off the outer ring road in York, situated next to Aldi on Water Lane in Clifton Without. Storage units at the York centre range from 16 sq ft to 5,000 sq ft in size and, as with all our storage centres, are accessible only by the key holder, with unique pin code access to the building. There is ample free onsite parking and security so you can rest assured your belongings are kept safe. There’s also lifts and equipment to help you get your items from vehicle to unit as easily as possible.

But there’s something else which makes this storage centre so special. As well as offering storage space, McCarthy’s Storage World York is also able to provide trade counter and office space for small businesses. There are a range of office sizes available, ranging from two person to six person facilities, complete with WiFi, power and heating. The trade counters could work for everything from a florist or tattoo parlour to someone selling trade supplies.

So far, customers have been evenly split between those needing space for business reasons and those needing it for personal reasons. Because people have been planning house moves and doing DIY during lockdown, many have required self-storage to create extra space at home. There’s also those selling their homes while the market is strong but who haven’t yet completed on a new property.

We’ve had a lot of interest from businesses who are downsizing their office space now people are working remotely, so our workspace and our storage space has been in demand. Even if people can work from home, they’re not keen to start storing stock or office supplies in their spare room! Having storage and workspace under one roof, but without the high overheads of a traditional office, can make things much more straightforward and cost effective. Everything’s on one bill, including rates. Businesses right now want flexibility and we’re happy to scale up or down the size of storage units in line with a customer’s needs. We appreciate it can be hard to plan too far ahead at the moment.
